André Soravassi do Carmo
Leadership Portfolio
Hello!
About me:
A picture of myself (the one on the right)
My name is André Soravassi do Carmo and I am an Economics senior at the University of Washington. As with everything I do, I came from Brazil to UW to learn as much as I could and aimed to challenge myself to do new things in the process. Continuous learning motivates me and is why I do what I do - if I am not learning something new I might as well not do it.
The video rotating above is the firework show at Epcot, in Walt Disney World, and it is a very big part of my childhood. I was fortunate and privileged enough to have visited it a few times growing up and I believe it helps illustrate my curiosity along the years. One of its most notable rides, Spaceship Earth, tells the story of how human communication evolved as time passed by. That attraction was my favorite one as a child, and my father translating and explaining what was going on one of my most treasured memories. I strive to keep being curious everyday and seek new knowledge and experiences the same way I enjoyed learning on that theme park.
Core Values and Leadership Identities
Distance between my hometown and Seattle
With this intentionality around continuous learning, comes my main core values: growth, resilience, loyalty and enthusiasm. All of them add a different layer towards it, with growth being the center of it all:
-
Growth: end goal - continuous learning
-
Resilience: Important for keeping me moving forward no matter the adversities
-
Loyalty: Important for caring about the people around me and myself along the process
-
Enthusiasm: Important for keeping a positive attitude
These values are reflected on my leadership identities, that serve as a north star for me to guide my actions towards continuous learning. They are especially important for me as they are a more tangible and actionable version of what I am aspiring to be. In times when everything seems urgent and we are constantly putting out fires, I find it refreshing and enlightening to have this “north star” to clear up the way. These unique identities are:
-
Intentional Doer: I enjoy learning by doing and aim to do things I haven’t before. At the same time, I do not enjoy doing tasks only for the sake of doing them. I strive to always have an intention behind everything I do so that I can use my time effectively and be closer to achieving my goals.
-
Energy Spreader: Coming from the fact that most of communication happens nonverbally, especially through body language, I like to be mindful of that and spread positive energy on my day-to-day interactions. You never know when someone might be having a bad day, and one random act of positive energy can go a long way. Spreading this positive energy ultimately also gives me positive energy and keeps me moving forward.
-
Caring Challenger: Because of loyalty, and because I care about the people that surround me and their growth, I will give them negative feedback if need be. I would rather have a difficult and open conversation than to postpone handling a problem. At the same time I aim to care personally and challenge direct others, I strive to do the same with myself. I balance my ambition for continuous improvement with self care.
Graduating from UW in a few months, I envision to continue practicing a continuous learning and self-awareness oriented leadership. In 2019 one of my main goals, for example, is to embrace vulnerability. I want to have a managerial position in the medium-term, where I can apply what I have been learning in the workplace, but will strive to be a leader in all aspects of my life - from small interactions to big and important tasks
